Gourmet Gift Baskets for New Homeowners: A Delicious Way to Say Welcome

When someone moves into a new home, there are plenty of gifts you could give them.

A plant. A kitchen gadget. A personalized doormat. A bottle of wine.

But one of my favorite choices after more than 30 years in the gift business is something much simpler:

Good food.

A gourmet gift basket is a wonderful way to celebrate a new home because it gives the new homeowner something they can enjoy right away. They don’t have to find a place for it on a shelf, figure out how to assemble it, or worry about whether it matches their decorating style.

They can simply open it and enjoy.

And after dealing with moving boxes, movers, address changes, and a seemingly endless list of things to do, a little something delicious can be a welcome break.

Why Gourmet Gift Baskets Make Good Housewarming Gifts

Moving into a new home is exciting, but it can also be exhausting.

Even when the move goes smoothly, there are boxes to unpack, furniture to arrange, closets to organize, and all those little things that somehow don’t get done until after you move in.

A food gift basket can provide a little moment of pleasure in the middle of all that work.

It might give them something to snack on while they’re unpacking.

It might provide breakfast for the first morning in the new kitchen.

Or it might simply give them something delicious to enjoy when they finally sit down at the end of the day.

That’s one reason I’ve always liked food gifts for new homeowners.

They’re meant to be enjoyed, not stored.

A Gourmet Gift Can Be Tailored to Almost Anyone

One of the biggest advantages of a gourmet gift basket is the variety.

You can choose foods based on what you know the recipient enjoys.

For the Sweet Tooth

Someone who loves sweets might enjoy a basket filled with chocolates, cookies, brownies, candy, or other baked treats.

A beautiful box of cookies can be just as welcome as a basket filled with more exotic foods.

A breakfast gift can be especially appropriate for someone who has just moved.

Coffee, tea, jams, honey, pancake mixes, baked goods, and other breakfast treats can make those first mornings in a new kitchen a little easier.

For the Savory Snack Lover

Not everyone has a sweet tooth.

Some people would much rather receive nuts, crackers, cheese, pretzels, chips, or other savory snacks.

A combination of sweet and savory foods can be a good choice when you aren’t sure what the recipient prefers.

For the Coffee or Tea Lover

Moving can make that first cup of coffee or tea even more important.

A coffee gift or tea gift can be a simple way to help someone settle into their new kitchen.

And unlike a decorative gift, it won’t require finding somewhere to put it.

What If You Don’t Know Their Food Preferences?

This is one of the advantages of giving a gourmet gift basket.

You don’t necessarily have to know exactly what they like.

A basket containing a variety of sweet and savory treats gives them choices.

And if you know a little about them, you can make the gift much more personal.

Do they love chocolate?

Are they always talking about their morning coffee?

Do they prefer salty snacks?

Are they health-conscious?

Do they enjoy trying new foods?

Even one little piece of information can help you choose a gift that feels personal rather than generic.

If you’re buying for someone with dietary restrictions, be sure to take those into consideration. There are food gifts available for a variety of preferences and special diets, but it’s always better to know what the recipient can and cannot eat before ordering.

A Gourmet Gift Basket Doesn’t Have to Be Expensive

The word “gourmet” sometimes makes people think of expensive or exotic food.

I used to think that myself.

Then I discovered that gourmet simply means a lover of good food.

That realization completely changed how I thought about gourmet gift baskets.

A gourmet gift doesn’t have to contain foods you’ve never heard of or cost a fortune. It simply needs to contain good food that someone will enjoy.

That’s why a basket of wonderful cookies can be just as appropriate as one filled with imported cheeses or specialty foods.

If you’d like to read more about what “gourmet” really means, I wrote about my own surprise in What Does “Gourmet” Really Mean? I Was Surprised!.

Gourmet Gifts Are Especially Good for People Who Already Have Everything

Have you ever tried to buy a gift for someone who seems to have everything?

It’s not easy.

They probably don’t need another picture frame, serving dish, candle, or kitchen gadget.

Food solves that problem nicely.

Even someone with a beautifully furnished home can enjoy a box of cookies, a basket of specialty snacks, or a selection of coffee and tea.

And once it’s enjoyed, there’s no permanent reminder that you didn’t know what else to buy.

That’s a good thing.

What About a Gourmet Gift for a New Neighbor?

A gourmet food gift can also be a wonderful way to welcome someone who has just moved into your neighborhood.

I used to be a Welcome Wagon hostess, and I remember personally delivering baskets filled with goodies, local coupons, and information about the community to newcomers.

The world has changed quite a bit since then.

We may not have the same formal Welcome Wagon tradition today, but the idea behind it is still a good one:

“Welcome. We’re glad you’re here.”

If you’re giving a gourmet gift to a new neighbor, consider adding something that introduces them to the community.

A few locally made foods, information about nearby restaurants, a list of favorite places, or even a handwritten note can turn a food gift into a personal welcome.

And if you don’t know their tastes yet, a variety of sweet and savory foods gives them something to choose from.

Don’t Forget the Timing

One thing I’ve learned after years of sending gifts is that when a gift arrives can be just as important as what is in it.

If someone is still surrounded by moving boxes, a basket of snacks and easy-to-eat foods may be perfect.

But if they’ve been in the house for a few weeks and are finally beginning to settle in, a more indulgent gourmet gift might be just what they need.

You don’t have to send the gift on moving day.

Sometimes a gift that arrives a week or two later is even more appreciated because the excitement of the move has worn off and the reality of settling in has begun.

And if you’re looking specifically for something to help someone get through moving day, that’s a different kind of gift. Our Moving Day Survival Kit guide has ideas for the things people often wish they had kept close instead of putting them on the moving truck.

You Can Make Your Own Gourmet Gift Basket

You don’t have to purchase a ready-made basket.

Creating one yourself can make the gift even more personal.

Start with a basket, box, wooden crate, or even a pretty container that can be used again.

Then choose a few foods you know the recipient will enjoy.

For example:

  • Their favorite coffee or tea
  • Cookies or brownies
  • Specialty crackers
  • Nuts
  • Chocolate
  • Jam or preserves
  • Honey
  • Breakfast foods
  • Savory snacks

You could even add a handwritten note welcoming them to their new home.

The food doesn’t have to be fancy.

It’s the thought behind the choices that makes the gift special.

Sometimes the Best Part of the Gift Is the Thought Behind It

When someone has just moved into a new home, they have plenty of things to think about.

Where will this box go?

When will we get the pictures hung?

Where did we put the coffee maker?

When will we finally get everything unpacked?

A gourmet gift basket doesn’t solve all those problems.

But it can give someone a few minutes to stop, take a breath, and enjoy something good.

And sometimes that’s exactly what a thoughtful gift is supposed to do.

A Delicious Way to Say “Welcome Home”

After more than 30 years of sending gifts for new homes, new neighbors, clients, customers, friends, and family members, I’ve learned that the best gifts aren’t necessarily the most elaborate.

They’re the ones that make the recipient feel remembered.

A gourmet gift basket says:

“Congratulations on your new home.”

“I hope you enjoy this.”

And sometimes simply:

“I’m thinking about you.”

That’s why I think good food makes such a wonderful housewarming gift.

The house may still be filled with boxes.

The pictures may not be hung.

The furniture may not all be in its final place.

But for a few minutes, they can sit down, open a package of something delicious, and enjoy their new home.

And isn’t that what a housewarming gift is really supposed to be about?

Whether you send a beautifully arranged basket or a simple box of their favorite cookies, the most important ingredient isn’t the food.

It’s the thought you put into choosing it.
