Why Care Packages Are More Than Just Gifts

Sometimes words aren’t enough.

Maybe someone you love is going through a difficult time. Maybe a friend is far away and you wish you could be there. Maybe someone has done something special for you and you want them to know that you appreciate it.

You want to say something, but you aren’t quite sure how.

That’s where a care package can help.

A care package takes your feelings and turns them into something tangible. It’s a way of saying “I’m thinking about you when you can’t be there to say it in person.

After more than 30 years in the gift business, I’ve learned that the things inside a care package are only part of the gift.

The real gift is knowing that someone cared enough to think about you.

I Learned What a Care Package Really Means

I didn’t fully understand the power of a care package until I experienced it myself.

The week my husband died unexpectedly was horrible.

There were so many things that had to be taken care of, and I was trying to manage everything while grieving. I wasn’t eating properly and I wasn’t sleeping well. I was simply trying to get through each day.

Someone in my neighborhood had heard what happened.

She was someone I really didn’t know very well.

One day she knocked on my door carrying a care package she had put together herself.

Inside were coffee, easy-to-prepare foods, a glass jar filled with flowers, and a note expressing her sympathy.

It wasn’t an elaborate gift.

But it lifted my spirits.

It gave me something to eat when I wasn’t taking care of myself. The flowers brought a little beauty into a very difficult week. And the note reminded me that someone cared.

Most importantly, that simple package helped me get through one of the hardest weeks of my life.

That is what a care package is all about.

A Care Package Is a Hug You Can Send

Think about the last time you received something thoughtful in the mail.

Maybe it was a handwritten letter.

A box of cookies.

A card from someone you hadn’t heard from in a long time.

Or perhaps a small gift that arrived unexpectedly.

Didn’t it make you feel good?

That’s the magic of a care package.

It isn’t just the things inside the box.

It’s the feeling you get when you realize that someone was thinking about you.

A carefully chosen care package can say:

  • “I see you.”
  • “I care about you.”
  • “I know you’re going through something.”
  • “You matter to me.”
  • “I’m thinking about you even though I can’t be there.”

Those are powerful messages.

And sometimes they are difficult to say in person.

Where Did the Care Package Come From?

The phrase “care package” actually has a fascinating history.

During World War II, CARE began sending packages of food and supplies to people in war-torn Europe. These weren’t gift boxes in the way we think of them today. They contained necessities—things people genuinely needed to survive.

Over time, the idea changed.

Families began sending packages from home to soldiers, college students, and loved ones living far away. Cookies, candy, letters, personal-care items and little reminders of home began finding their way into those boxes.

I remember receiving care packages myself when I was away from home during my freshman year at Judson College. Years later, I found myself doing the same thing for my daughters and eventually my grandchildren when they were away from home.

The contents had changed, but the message hadn’t:

“Someone at home is thinking about you.”

Some of the Best Care Packages Aren’t Sent for an Occasion

One of the things I love about care packages is that they don’t require a special occasion.

You don’t need to wait for a birthday or holiday.

The beauty of a “just because” gift is that there is no expectation. No holiday. No birthday. No reason other than: “I was thinking about you.”

You can send one because someone is having a difficult week.

Because they are lonely.

Because they have a big exam coming up.

Because they just moved.

Because they are recovering from an illness.

Or simply because you thought about them.

A friend who was more my husband’s friend than mine periodically sends me greeting cards or stops by with a bouquet of flowers to brighten my day.

Another friend of my husband’s, who lives across the country, sent me a “Thinking of You” care package for Valentine’s Day.

These aren’t grand gestures.

But they are gifts I remember.

And that’s one of the wonderful things about thoughtful gifts: they can become memories.

Care Packages Can Be Cheerful or Comforting

A care package doesn’t always have to be serious.

Sometimes the person you’re thinking about simply needs a reason to smile.

A sunshine-themed gift might brighten the day of someone who needs encouragement.

A cup filled with tea and cookies can give someone a quiet moment to themselves.

A box of favorite snacks can be just what a college student needs when they’re missing home.

A plush bear can provide a little comfort to someone going through a difficult time.

The best care package is the one that fits the person and what they are experiencing right now.

That’s why I don’t believe there is one perfect care package for everyone.

A Care Package Can Say Thank You, Too

Care packages aren’t only for people who are struggling. They can also be a wonderful way to show appreciation. A thoughtful thank-you gift  can say something that a quick “thanks” sometimes can’t.Care packages aren’t only for people who are struggling.

Years ago, when I was a Realtor, one of my customers surprised me with a thank-you gift basket about a week after we closed on the house he was buying.

I remember the gift.

But what I remember even more is the note that came with it.

It said:

“Just wanted to thank you for your exceptional service and most of all your caring and concern during the purchase of our home.”

He went on to talk about the problems we’d had with the loan and how I had helped make the process work.

And then he said:

“You are my hero and someone that I will recommend to everyone that I know!”

I still have that note.

The food in the basket is long gone.

But I kept the words.

That’s another lesson about care packages:

The things inside may disappear, but the feeling behind them can last for years.

What Should You Put in a Care Package?

The answer depends entirely on the person you’re sending it to.

Start by thinking about what they need right now.

If they’re having a difficult time, consider comforting things:

  • Favorite snacks
  • Tea or coffee
  • Easy-to-prepare foods
  • Cozy socks or a small blanket
  • A candle or other relaxing item
  • A favorite book
  • Puzzle or activity books
  • A small plush animal
  • A handwritten note

If they’re celebrating something, make the package cheerful.

If they’re away at college, include some reminders of home.

If they’re recovering from an illness, think about things they can enjoy without much effort.

If they’re working especially hard, give them something that encourages them to take a break.

And if you don’t know exactly what they need, don’t worry.

You don’t have to get everything right.

The fact that you thought about them is already part of the gift.

The Note May Be the Most Important Part

If you’re sending a care package, don’t skip the note.

You don’t have to write a long letter.

Sometimes a few honest words are enough.

“I’ve been thinking about you.”

“I know this is a difficult time. I’m here if you need me.”

“Hope this makes you smile.”

“I wish I could be there.”

“Just wanted you to know that you matter to me.”

Those words can mean more than anything else in the box.

If you’re putting the package together yourself, you can even include a little explanation about why you chose certain items.

“I remembered how much you loved these cookies when we were on vacation together.”

Now the cookies aren’t just cookies.

They’re a memory.

That’s one of the reasons I believe the most meaningful gifts are often the ones that tell a story.

Care Packages Can Help Bridge Distance

We live in a world where it’s easy to stay in touch electronically.

We can text someone.

Send an email.

Make a video call.

Send a quick message on social media.

Those things are wonderful.

But there is still something special about receiving an actual package in the mail.

Someone had to think about you.

Someone had to choose something.

Someone had to put it in a box.

Someone had to send it on its way.

And then you get to open it.

For a few minutes, that person who may be hundreds or even thousands of miles away feels a little closer.

That’s why I sometimes think of a care package as a hug you can send through the mail.

A Care Package Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect

I’ve spent more than three decades helping people choose and create gifts, so you might expect me to tell you that the perfect care package requires the perfect combination of products.

It doesn’t.

Some of the most meaningful care packages are very simple.

A few favorite foods.

A flower.

A handwritten note.

Something that makes the recipient smile.

That’s enough.

You don’t need a huge basket overflowing with products.

You need a reason for sending it.

And you need a little thought behind what you choose.

More Than a Gift

When someone receives a care package, they receive more than the items inside.

They receive a message.

“Someone is thinking about me.”

“Someone noticed that I was having a hard time.”

“Someone wanted to make my day a little better.”

That’s why care packages are more than just gifts.

They can offer comfort when someone is hurting.

Encouragement when someone is struggling.

Appreciation when someone deserves a thank-you.

And connection when distance keeps us apart.

Sometimes a care package can even create a memory that lasts much longer than anything inside the box.

I know that because I’ve experienced it myself.

And I suspect that most of us have, at one time or another.

The next time you’re thinking about someone but aren’t sure what to say, don’t worry about finding the perfect words.

Send a little care instead.

It might be exactly what they need.
