But when is Father's Day? And why does it change dates every year? Read on for  some interesting history behind the holiday and the date it falls on.  Even though the date changes year-to-year, it always falls on the third Sunday in June.

Father’s Day is a holiday that wasn't created for the greeting card industy.  It was first celebrated in the United States in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908.  Grace Golden Clayton, wanted to honor the many men who had died in the worst mining explosion in U.S. History which killed more than 360 men and boys that year.

Father's Day wasn't  celebrated again until nearly two years later on June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington when it was revived by Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd.  It became an annual event in Spokane and soon, other towns started their own celebrations.

During the '20s and '30s, people tried to do away with both Mother's Day and Father's Day and replace them with Parents’ Day instead.  During the Great Depression, retailers made a push to commercialize the holiday in an attempt to make money during dire financial times.  When World War II started, people began to use Father's Day as a way to pay respect to American troops.

Fast forward to 1966 when President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day.  It wasn’t until 1972, however, that the day was made a permanent national holiday when
President Richard Nixon signed it into law to celebrate the contributions made by Good Old Dad in our lives.

Throughout the world, over sixty countries celebrate Father's Day on the 3rd Sunday in June also, including Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Mexico, Greece, Jamaica, Cuba, Paraguay and  Ecuador.

Even though it is now a commercial holiday, every day should be celebrated as Father's Day as we honor the men who are important in our lives.
